New Unemployment Numbers and the Future of the Economy

Vic Napier of the Examiner.com discusses current workforce trends in the article “New Unemployment and the Future of the Economy”. Interesting facts discussed include (Workforce Vision comments in Bold Italics):

  • “The portion of the unemployed who have been out of work for more than six months is now at 38%, an increase of 18% in the last three months.”  Thus people who are out of work are still having significant trouble finding new jobs. economy030729
  • “Economists tell us that this recession is structural, meaning that fundamentals of the economy are changing. That means that entire sectors of the economy are undergoing change – maybe even disappearing entirely.”  In order for companies and individuals to thrive they MUST be open to new sectors, services, products, and ways of doing business.
  • “Most notably, look for an increase in nontraditional employment arraignments.”  As has been the trend for decades contingent labor models are going to increase, however over the next few years and coming decades this trend will increase rapidly.
  • “Companies will likely hire temps over permanent workers, at least in the early stages of recovery. However, this might also be a long term trend. Temporary workers insulate businesses from fluctuation in demand, and it might be a long while until all sectors of the economy stabilize.”   Again contingent labor will become a major component of the U.S. (and Global) labor force. Many companies are rapidly adjusting to make the most of this shift. Many workers are being forced into these arrangements for lack of other options.
  • “If the future of the economy involves wide use of temporary workers it is inevitable that professionals will join the ranks of the contingent workforce as well.”  Contingent labor is moving from administrative and light industrial positions to being commonplace amongst professionals.
